Artist's Flyer

Mike Kendall was the Artist-in-Residence at the Sanitary Fill Company when BATH1 was held.    Artist-in-Residence is a highly sought-after position for which many artists apply. It's a 3 month gig, during which the artist has exclusive use of a huge studio at the dump, receives a stipend, and is given a show at the end of his tenure. The biggest stipulation is that the artist must use materials found at the dump, which means (by default) that most of the Artists-in-Residence are sculptors. There is a wonderful sculpture garden behind the studio, where examples of prior artists' work can be viewed.

To see some examples of prior artists' work, visit the Artist-in-Residence web site.

You can see some of the work Mike did as Artist in Residence here: http://www.sunsetscavenger.com/AIR_kendall.htm and his home page here: http://www.mikekendall.com/. In a nice coincidence, Game Control learned that Mike was planning to have his reception and show, "Wasteland: Redirecting the Flow", the week after the game.  So Game Control was able to work with him in printing the next clue on the flyer advertising his show. When teams visited his studio, they were given one of his flyers, though he didn't tell them it was the next clue, they had to figure that out for themselves.

Hints

Hint 1 identified one of the two characters (see solution).

Hint 2 was at Game Control's discretion, and generally dealt with the fact that teams were looking for an intersection, or with the actual physical location of the clue.

Solution

This was simply a matter of knowing the names of the animated characters depicted on the back of the artist's flyer.  Many teams knew the bottom figure, Esmeralda, from Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", but weren't familiar with Elsie, the Borden cow (see this page for more details than you'd probably care to know).

Once teams had the names, a swift review of the map index and map provided in the game packet showed that Elsie and Esmeralda were an intersection in the appropriate sector.  The clue was taped to the back of the large arrow sign at the intersection, at the base of the stairs leading up to the top of Bernal Heights.  Observant teams did not need to make the hike up the stairs; others got their exercise…
