stay
in the far left lane and turn LEFT onto VAN NESS AVENUE (0.2)

Parking
There
is parking in several locations near the start.
UPPER
FORT MASON
- follow the directions above to enter the Fort. Turn left at the admin
building (see map) and find parking near there, or keep wending your
way parallel to Bay Street until you find the parking lot inside the
Fort between Gough Streets and Octavia Streets (one to two blocks west
of where you entered). Some of these parking spaces may limit
the number of hours you can park, so check the signage.
LOWER
FORT MASON
- follow the directions to Bay & Franklin but do not enter the Fort.
If
you are approaching from Franklin, turn left onto Bay, get into the
right lane, and follow the traffic flow - right onto Laguna, go two
blocks, left at the Marina Safeway, go one block. At the far end of
the Marina Safeway, at the foot of Buchanan Street, turn right into
Lower Fort Mason.
If
you are approaching from Bay, continue west on Bay, get into the right
lane, and follow the traffic flow - right onto Laguna, go two blocks,
left at the Marina Safeway, go one block. At the far end of the Marina
Safeway, at the foot of Buchanan Street, turn right into Lower Fort
Mason.
There
is plenty of parking there at Gas House Cove and inside the Fort.
VAN
NESS AVENUE / ACQUATIC PARK
- one block east of Franklin is Van Ness Avenue. If you go north on
Van Ness Avenue (toward the bay) you will find parking there and at
Acquatic Park.

Walking
to the Start from your Car
FROM
UPPER FORT MASON
- find your way to the chapel which is one block north of the entrance
at Bay and Franklin. As if you were continuing north on Franklin,
walk past the chapel, keeping it on your left. Approximately one city
block north of the chapel, you'll come to a dead-end roundabout. Just
past this is a flight of about 12 steps leading down. This will take
you directly to the Black Point Battery picnic area.
FROM
LOWER FORT MASON
- walk toward the hill leading up to Upper Fort Mason. You will see
a flight of steps leading up to the upper Fort. Take these steps. At
the top, turn left and follow the road along the waterline. Take your
first opportunity to turn right uphill onto a paved road THAT IS WIDE
ENOUGH FOR CARS, which will lead to the back of the youth hostel building.
Turn left onto the grassy lawn you'll see on your left. This is the
west-most point of the Black Point Battery area. Walk through it to
the picnic tables.
FROM
VAN NESS AVENUE / ACQUATIC PARK
- walk north nearly to the end of Van Ness Avenue until you are about
100 feet away from the municipal pier. On your left (across the grass)
you will see a flight of steps leading steeply upward. Take these steps.
As the path turns and then levels off, you'll see another short flight
of steps to your left, leading upward. Take these, and you will reach
the Black Point Battery picnic area.
