MOCK URBAN CHALLENGE 2
San Francisco
June 13, 2004

| Teams
Thirteen teams turned out for
the second annual free Mock Urban Challenge on a
beautiful sunny San Francisco morning. We deviated
from the real Urban Challenge just a bit. Instead of starting
at Jillian's at 4th & Howard, we started at The
Canvas Cafe on 9th Avenue & Lincoln in San Francisco,
right across the street from Golden Gate Park. It's a massive
airy light space, with art on the walls, many comfortable
seating areas, and really good food.
Teams started with a 30-question
multiple choice trivia quiz. They were seeded into five
groups based on their trivia scores, with only the first
20 answers counting, and the remaining 10 answers being
used to break ties, if necessary.
To see how you would have done, go to the Verizon
Wireless Urban Challenge web site and take the 2004
Washington DC trivia test, which is on-line. That is the
trivia which we used in the Mock game.
The game clock started when the first team left the start
area. Each wave was released exactly three minutes
after the previous wave, so the fifth wave had to try to
make up a 12 minute handicap.
Results of the trivia:
1st wave
16/6 Jan Chong and Rahul Gupta*
16/6 Yar Woo (sp?) / Michael Fishman*
15/4 Dennis Chang/John Brady
2nd wave
14/4 Gregory Glockner/Eric Raynard
14/1 Dave Blum/Adam Salkin
3rd wave
13/5 Mike Connors/Cliff Wong
13/4 Ryan Bradley/Justin "JD" Davis
13/3 Carmen Lau/Raymond Ho
4th wave
12/4 Sean Quinlan/Becky Volz
12/3 Greg deBeer/David Alyea
5th wave
11/8 Karen Li/Indra Kabul
11/4 Jenny Gu/Bernie Su
9/4 S.K. Panda/Julie Presnell
* note - in the real UC you
are *not* allowed to collaborate on the trivia with another
team, but these two teams didn't know that
Here are the results of the
actual race (note: three teams didn't return to the finish).
CP stands for "checkpoint."
Eleven teams found the skip guy and earned the right to
bypass one clue site.
Clue number 6 contained a play
on words which was not in the normal UC style, and which
none of the teams got. You'll see why when we post the clues
in a few weeks! This caused delays for all teams, and actually
resulted in many teams being DQ'd. Those who were forced
to skip clue 6 had to then visit clue 11, which was out
of the way, and delayed them further.
