MOCK URBAN CHALLENGE 2
June 13, 2004
CLUES

About  |  Clues | Teams

CHECKPOINT 1

It’s no occident…Checkpoint 1 is found in Golden Gate Park, and kinda sounds like:

the  Indian word for tea
+
joints of the ginglymus type in the middle part of the human leg
+
Ma’s partner
+
the bad guy in a movie

CHECKPOINT 2

Not here!  This bookstore has something in common with a 1980’s TV series about life in a big-city hospital.  Two eventual best actor Oscar winners (one male, one female) starred in the series.  Find it within 1/2 mile of Race HQ.

CHECKPOINT 3

Or…we walk? In 1914 Henry Ford offered the Model T in "any color so long as it is black."  Find the outer Haight Street establishment whose name might best describe Joe Q. Public’s lack of options at that time.

CHECKPOINT 4

In an Altered State  Checkpoint 4 shares its name (but not its spelling) with a word that appears in the titles of  #1 hits by Vicki Lawrence, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Ray Charles (R.I.P.  6/10/04).  Find it in the Marina District.

CHECKPOINT 5

Teal, Navy, Azure  Along the old Fillmore Street jazz corridor, you’ll find an art installation named for a Johnny Hodges album released in 1970.  Snap your picture with it in the background.

CHECKPOINT 6

Hey, how’d we get to Jerusalem?  Unscramble the following words to find an establishment within a half mile of St. Mary’s Cathedral (the newer one),  then find the building feature that fits the clue title and take your apicture in front of it, ‘cause that’s Checkpoint 6.

MOTHER BELL CHRIST

CHECKPOINT 7

Got plot?   Scotty & Carlotta, not so hot.  Checkpoint 7 shares its name with a classic suspense film set in San Francisco about a detective who becomes obsessed with the woman he is hired to follow.

Please Note:

>> All team members must be in the picture

>> Don’t ruin the game; stay on public property!

>> Observe all traffic laws and stay on the lawn.

>> Race with honor.

>> Do not knock on strangers’ doors and ask for help with a photo.  People don’t like that.

>> Any problems during the race, call Alexandra at 415.xxx.xxxx

CHECKPOINT 8

Coasting along.  True or false:  Rhode Island has more miles of coastline than  Hawaii.

If true, then checkpoint 8 is:

Dionne (who wants to know the way to San Jose)
+
Philbin (“Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”)
+
Arthur Hailey novel

If false, then checkpoint 8 is:

“the best beach in America” in 2004, according to Doctor Beach

CHECKPOINT 9

Gabriel Blow Your Horn Up.  Checkpoint 9 can be found in a colorful Mission District alley named after a type of medieval trumpet.  Find the answer to Checkpoint 4 from the semifinals at the Urban Challenge Nationals in New Orleans last fall, then make sure it’s in the picture with you.

CHECKPOINT 10

Robbing the nest?  He wrote an angina-inspiring opus of reeling brilliance,
then founded a writer’s workshop for students ages 8 to 18.  If you know the name of the workshop, you also know where to find it within ½ mile of the
16th Street BART station.

CHECKPOINT 11

It ain’t over til the fat man complains.    Checkpoint 11 can be found at (2X2 -597)   X/2 Street.

Add one or more A’s (and A’s only) to each group of consonants below to make a word. For example, cbn becomes cabana. Solve them all and count the A’s.  Substitute the total number of A’s for each X in the equation above.  Note: The  list contains several proper nouns.
