YABA4 - clue 8
The clue consisted of two strings of letter beads, encased
in ice, and given to teams in a styrofoam cup. Each
division got an identical copy of the smaller string that
said "FOR YOUR ICE ONLY."

There was a different version of the longer
string for each team.

Beginner String

Regular String

Masters String
Teams resorted to fabulous methods for melting
the ice - borrowing microwaves in various establishments,
using hot water taps in bathrooms, attempting to chip it
or with car keys or smash it against concrete curbs. A few
teams tried to pull the string out of the ice, with disastrous
results - even though we doubled it when stringing the beads,
the fishing line on which the beads had been strung snapped,
leaving teams with a whole batch of beads and not much of
a clue (so to speak!).
Fortunately this clue was received at a clue hub (Caffe
Malvina) along with clues 5, 6 and 7, and most teams went
across the street to Washington Square to work on the clues.
We had a few spares, so any team whose string broke was
able to get a replacement from M, after she scolded them
for not paying attention to her instructions to treat the
clue gently.
