Beginner
Use your little gray cells to figure
this one out. Think hard, and you'll recall the answer.
If you addressed a letter using only the names of these
three streets, one of which is connected to both of
the others, and you sent it before October 7th, it would
probably get to its intended recipient.
From the southernmost intersection of
two of these streets, head one block east and find a
great glass elevator that will take you high. Attempt
to rise to your assigned level.
To the person on the team whose first
name is earliest in the alphabet: If you were born in
spring, your level is 9; summer, 10; fall, 11, winter,
12. Now, head as far as you can in the only direction
you can make from the word "chocolates" and then look
for a pre-college girl's magazine. Just beyond it, find
fire and ice, then tell us what is the penguin's
name?
{note to treasure hunters: Be stealthy.
There is a good chance you will not be able to follow
the instructions above. Your replacement assignment
is to find an eclipse in the lobby, and tell us what
it is made of. Either answer is acceptable.}
The beginner
division got some obvious hints - little GRAY cells...think
hard, and you'll RECALL the answer. At the time of YABA5,
California was in preparation for a special vote to
recall Governor Gray Davis on October 7th. Before
that date, assuming he was recalled (which he was),
a letter addressed simply to DAVIS, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
would probably have reached the Governor. As it happens,
both Sacramento and California Streets meet at Davis
Street in San Francisco (one block apart). The southernmost
intersection of two of these streets would be California
& Davis. One block east of this intersection is
the Hyatt Regency.
The only direction
you can make from "chocolates" is east (chocol-ATES=>
EAST). The elevators inside the Hyatt Regency go up
to the hotel room floors. At the far east end of floors
9, 10, 11 and 12 is a fire extinguisher, and an ice
machine with a penguin logo ("fire and ice").
Above the penguin was the word Hoshizaki.

During the playtests
a couple of weeks earlier, we had been kicked out of
the upper floors because we weren't hotel guests. Therefore,
we came up with an alternate clue site, the "eclipse
in the lobby." This was a 35-foot tall anodyzed
aluminum sculpture by Charles Perry entitled "Eclipse,"
towering above the huge atrium lobby of the Hyatt Regency.
I used to go to afternoon tea dances here in the 1980's
sometimes - we'd all get to swing dancing, and jumping
around, and this sculpture would vibrate and bounce
right along with us!
I'm sure some
teams decided to save time by going to the alternate
location, realizing it would take less time. Smart!
